France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation into a shooting at a school in Aubagne after initial findings suggested a possible link between the 14-year-old suspect and the “True Crime Community” movement, Franceinfo reported.
The suspect is accused of firing several shots at Joseph Lakanal middle school on Monday, injuring the principal and a teacher. The Marseille prosecutor’s office initially opened an investigation into attempted murder.
Initial inquiries, including an examination of the minor’s digital devices, indicated “probable adherence” to the movement and that the alleged crime at the school may have been framed within its ideology, the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said.
Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said the student fired once or twice in a communal area on the first floor shortly after 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT). The principal and teacher, who were in a corridor, were hit in the lower limbs and taken to hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening, according to media reports.
The student then went to the second floor and fired twice more, including once inside an occupied classroom. That shot hit the blackboard, Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said. No students were injured.
A student suspected of carrying out the shooting was arrested. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with the injured staff members, as well as with students and parents left in shock, and praised the school staff’s response.
Media reports said the shooting was unrelated to student protests taking place elsewhere in France.
