Ilham Aliyev, the son-in-law of Ramiz Mehdiyev, the former head of the Presidential Administration and former president of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), who is currently under house arrest, has suffered a bereavement.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Ilham Aliyev’s brother, Fikrat Aliyev, who held senior positions at various institutions for many years, has died.
Fikrat Aliyev served as a colonel in the now-defunct Ministry of National Security. He also served as vice-rector of the International University and as chairman of the Central Military Medical Commission under the State Service for Mobilization and Conscription.
A month after Ramiz Mehdiyev was elected president of ANAS, Fikrat Aliyev was appointed deputy head of the ANAS Administrative Affairs Department (Qafqazinfo).
The State Service for Mobilization and Conscription oversees military registration and conscription in Azerbaijan. ANAS is the country’s principal scientific institution, conducting research across a range of fields.
