A fire broke out at Albania’s Education Ministry on Wednesday as student-led protests in the capital, Tirana, entered a second consecutive day, Albanian news outlet Shekulli reported. Police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators.
Some students climbed over a wall and entered the ministry grounds, while flames were seen in a second-floor window. Black smoke was later reported coming from the building.
Students began gathering outside the ministry at about 11 a.m. local time (0900 GMT), in greater numbers than on Tuesday. Protesters built a barricade from railings, set fire to rubbish bins and street advertisements, and threw stones and other objects at police.
Firefighters arrived to put out the blaze as clashes continued in nearby streets.
The EU Delegation to Albania voiced concern over the escalation and called for an investigation into allegations that police used excessive force against protesters and journalists.
“We take note of the allegations of excessive violence by the police against protestors and journalists,” the delegation said, adding that police actions must be proportionate and respect fundamental rights.
The delegation urged all sides to ease tensions, saying constructive dialogue was the way forward.
