The European Council on Monday approved the first five European Defense Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs), aimed at strengthening the European Union’s defense readiness and industrial capacity.
The projects unite EU member states in developing capabilities involving drones and counter-drone systems, maritime and seabed defense, space, air and missile defense, and the protection of the bloc’s eastern flank, according to a statement.
Projects eligible for EU funding
Introduced under the European Defense Industry Programme (EDIP), which the EU adopted in 2025, the EDPCIs are intended to help member states jointly develop military capabilities considered critical to the bloc’s security and defense interests.
The initiative focuses particularly on projects that are too large or complex for individual countries to pursue on their own.
The five projects are now eligible for EU funding through the EDIP. The programme will support their initial deployment and create a basis for possible additional funding under the planned European Competitiveness Fund.
Commissioner highlights joint effort
“Today’s decision shows that Europe can be ambitious and deliver on its promises. Member States, together with the support of the EU, are joining forces, pooling their expertise and investing together in the capabilities we need,” European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius said.
