Ethiopia’s parliament has reelected Abiy Ahmed as prime minister for another five years.
His reelection followed the general election in June, in which the ruling Prosperity Party won 438 of the 547 seats in parliament.
Abiy took the constitutional oath of office at a ceremony attended by President Taye Atske-Selassie and senior government officials.
The new term begins as fighting has intensified between Ethiopian government forces and the newly formed Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, an armed group seeking to overthrow Abiy’s government.
Ethiopia has accused regional countries, including neighbouring Eritrea, of supporting armed groups.
On Thursday, the Ethiopian government announced it was closing its embassy in Eritrea and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats in Addis Ababa persona non grata.
