Eight of the 12 crew members aboard a tanker are missing after it caught fire off Romania’s coast, naval authorities said. There were reports of explosions on board, AFP reported.
The San Marino-flagged Wine Trader was about 13 nautical miles (24km) east of the mouth of the River Danube at Sulina when it reported explosions and a fire on Thursday morning.
Nearby vessels reportedly said the tanker had been hit by two drones, but the reports have not been confirmed.
Russian drones were detected overnight near Ukraine’s Snake Island, not far from the scene of the fire.
The western Black Sea coast has seen a series of drone attacks over the past two weeks. On Tuesday, two merchant ships were struck by drones farther south off Bulgaria, Romania’s neighbour, and one of the vessels sank.
Bulgaria said it suspected Russia was behind that attack and summoned the country’s envoy.
