World leaders have gathered in New York for the next session of the 2026 UN General Assembly. The agenda includes conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, global security, trade, artificial intelligence, climate change and economic development.
China calls for cooperation on artificial intelligence
Addressing the General Assembly, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng stressed the importance of developing artificial intelligence through a human-centered approach. He said the technology should serve the well-being of humanity, help narrow the global digital divide and support inclusive development.
The Chinese official called for stronger international cooperation on the development of artificial intelligence. Technological advances should serve the common good, he said, adding that all countries, regardless of size, should have an equal voice in global affairs.
Beijing opposes protectionism
In his address, Han Zheng called for greater attention to development, poverty reduction and economic cooperation. He said protectionism and disruptions to supply chains posed a threat to global prosperity.
The vice president highlighted the importance of food security, the energy transition and development financing, particularly increased investment in countries of the Global South. He called on developed countries to fulfill their commitments on development and climate financing.
According to Beijing’s position, decoupling economic ties, trade barriers and restrictions on supply chains benefit no one. China considers it important to preserve a trading system centered on the World Trade Organization and an open global economy.
