Cable cut by construction workers delays flights at major US airports

Hundreds of flights were delayed at major US airports on Monday after construction workers accidentally cut a cable used for air traffic control, according to the BBC.

Ground stops and delays were issued at airports in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts. The damage affected the Terminal Radar Approach Control system, which helps guide aircraft during takeoff and landing.

Newark airport among the worst affected

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey experienced the largest disruption, flight-tracking website FlightAware reported. Some 267 departing flights were delayed, while another 257 flights bound for Newark were also delayed.
