The Main State Traffic Police Department (BDYPİ) has urged drivers to observe safety precautions when forced to stop on the road.

The agency provided the information to “Operative Information Center-OMM”.

According to the statement, a chain-reaction traffic accident in Neftchala district yesterday again demonstrated that a vehicle stopped because of a breakdown, as well as other vehicles that pull over to help, can pose a serious danger to other road users if their drivers and passengers fail to follow safety rules:

“On roads with heavy traffic in particular, failing to spot stopped vehicles in time can have serious consequences. If a vehicle has to stop because of a breakdown, the driver should move it off the carriageway as far as possible, switch on the hazard lights and place a warning triangle where other drivers can see it in time.”

The department said drivers stopping to help a broken-down vehicle should also avoid parking in a traffic lane or anywhere that restricts visibility:

“Carrying out repairs on the carriageway without ensuring safety is not permitted. Drivers and passengers should wait in a safe place away from the roadway and, where possible, contact the relevant services. Drivers approaching a stopped vehicle should reduce speed in advance, take care when changing lanes and increase the distance between vehicles. Passing stopped vehicles at high speed, using distracting devices and making sudden manoeuvres increase the risk of an accident.”
