Debate over uniform rules in schools in Azerbaijan continues. Discussions have focused on the principles of secular education, equality among students and maintaining order in schools. Some statements have also alleged that forces are seeking to exploit the situation to create confrontation in society.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that an AzTV segment on the issue discussed school uniform rules, parents’ views and the importance of common dress requirements in the educational environment.
“There can be no question of banning headscarves”
Statements on the issue stressed that wearing a headscarf is not generally prohibited in Azerbaijan, while dress requirements in schools are a separate matter.
It was noted that, under the principles of a secular state and secular education, school dress rules should not be equated with wearing a headscarf in everyday life. The speakers said setting these concepts against each other distorts the substance of the debate.
They also stressed that public discontent cannot be justified by religious belief or by debate over legal requirements if it turns into violence.
Claims were also made that outside interference and coordinated provocations were behind the incidents. However, no concrete evidence supporting these claims was presented.
“No child should be used in such processes”
Statements on the issue also highlighted the importance of parents remaining vigilant. Educational institutions should not become a means of creating confrontation in society, and children should not be drawn into any dispute, the speakers said.
They emphasized that schools are important places where children learn and their futures take shape. The speakers said that moral values instilled at home, respect for adults, responsibility and patriotism play an important role in children’s upbringing. In their view, dressing all students in the same way can help maintain discipline in schools.
The main aim is to uphold equality in the educational environment
Participants in the debate stressed that disagreements over school uniforms should not disrupt the education process. Preventing violence, threats and disruption of classes, as well as protecting students’ safety, were identified as key priorities.
According to the views expressed, school rules aim to ensure discipline and equality in the educational environment. Discussions about dress requirements should therefore help clarify the issue from legal and educational perspectives rather than fuel confrontation.
