The Main State Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has warned that railway crossings are dangerous sections of road.
In a statement provided by the department to “Operative Information Center-OMM”, it said:
“A crash at an unprotected crossing on the Salyan-Salmanli railway section, which fortunately caused only material damage, shows that driver discipline in this area remains unsatisfactory.
A Mercedes car collided with a moving train after its driver was forced to stop on the railway track. The driver managed to leave the vehicle at the last moment, but the railway infrastructure and the car sustained serious damage.
Analysis shows that such crashes are directly caused by driver negligence. In other words, drivers who see an approaching train but rely on road infrastructure intended to ensure that vehicles can cross the tracks safely, and enter the crossing without observing the requirements of traffic-control devices, make crashes inevitable.
The Main State Traffic Police Department reiterates that drivers approaching a railway crossing must follow road signs, traffic lights, road markings, the position of the barrier and instructions from the crossing attendant. They should proceed only after confirming that no train, locomotive or railcar is approaching.”
