The Republic of Azerbaijan, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is hosting World Environment Day (WED) in Baku. This significant international gathering underscores the country's growing role in global environmental diplomacy.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the event is being held under the theme: "Inspired by Nature. For the Climate. For Our Future." The discussions focus on sustainable development strategies and the urgent need for collective action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
During the event, Mukhtar Babayev, the representative of the President of Azerbaijan on climate issues, read an address from President Ilham Aliyev to the participants. The message emphasized Azerbaijan's dedication to environmental stewardship and its active participation in international climate initiatives.
It is worth noting that Azerbaijan officially accepted the baton for hosting World Environment Day during the 2024 event held in the Republic of Korea. This hosting duty serves as a critical precursor to the upcoming COP29 summit, which will also take place in Baku, positioning the capital as a central hub for global climate discourse in 2024.
