Azerbaijan has officially designated Iran as a country where its diplomatic missions and consulates operate under conditions of war and armed conflict. This decision mandates a transition to a special operational regime for the embassy in Tehran and the consulate in Tabriz, prioritizing the security and safety protocols of the diplomatic staff.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Prime Minister Ali Asadov signed a decree amending the "Rules for providing guarantees and compensation to diplomatic service personnel," which was originally approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on January 21, 2008. The amendment formally adds the Islamic Republic of Iran to the list of foreign states where Azerbaijani diplomatic missions function under these heightened security conditions.
The decree is set to take effect on March 1, 2026, and will remain in force until December 31 of the same year. Iran becomes the eighth country to be included in this specific category of diplomatic risk assessment.
This classification is a standard administrative procedure under Azerbaijani law, designed to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel stationed in regions experiencing geopolitical instability or security challenges.
