At least 11 people were injured after a gunman opened fire outside a high school in Turkey’s western province of Manisa on Tuesday morning, according to the local governor’s office and Turkish media reports.
The shooting took place at about 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT) near the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. The attacker fled the scene but was later detained, the governor’s office said.
Two victims reportedly in critical condition
Local media reported that two of the injured people taken to hospital were in critical condition. The authorities have not provided further details about the victims.
Footage shared online appeared to show a man carrying a firearm on a street near the school. Other clips apparently showed him fleeing while still holding the weapon.
Gunman’s motive remains unclear
The motive for the attack was not immediately known. Turkish media reported that the suspected gunman was a 15-year-old student, although officials had not confirmed his age or identity.
Turkey’s Education Ministry said the incident had “deeply saddened our nation, and our educational community in particular”. It added that three national investigators had been sent to Manisa.
