President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met International Judo Federation (IJF) President Ladislau-Marius Vizer on Oct. 3.

During the meeting, the head of state thanked Vizer for his support for the development of judo in Azerbaijan and for hosting the world championships in Baku. Aliyev said Azerbaijan would host the prestigious competition for the second time and expressed confidence that it would be organized to a high standard.

The president said judo is one of the most popular sports in Azerbaijan and one of the country’s leading sources of medals, and referred to athletes’ results at major competitions. He also noted the role of modern sports facilities built in Baku and the regions in achieving these successes.

Vizer expressed gratitude for the reception and the support provided for organizing the world championships, and congratulated Azerbaijani judokas on their medals at various competitions. The meeting also covered prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the IJF.

At the end of the meeting, Aliyev presented Vizer with the “Dostlug” Order. Vizer thanked the president for the high recognition of his work. He was awarded the order by presidential decree for his contributions to the development of judo.
