Azerbaijan and Cambodia have both experienced the challenges posed by landmine contamination.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev made the remarks during a joint statement to the press with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Baku.
The president recalled that mines remain a serious threat in territories since their liberation.
“We also discussed [in Baku today] a problem that, unfortunately, our countries have in common: the threat of mines. Both our countries have suffered, and continue to suffer, from the consequences of mine contamination. In this regard, exchanging experience, knowledge and technology, as well as holding training activities, is important.
Since Azerbaijan’s territories were liberated from occupation, more than 400 people have been killed or injured in recent years as a result of explosions of mines laid by Armenia during the occupation. Another important topic is peace and security,” the president said.
According to Ilham Aliyev, both countries regard peace and security as essential preconditions for development.
“At the same time, peace and security must be based on international law and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. After 30 years of occupation, Azerbaijan restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty by force. Today, every inch of Azerbaijan’s territory is under the control of the Azerbaijani state and people. Large-scale reconstruction and the Great Return program are now under way in territories cleared of Armenian occupation and mines,” the president said.
