Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has warned the United States and China that the Indo-Pacific is not a “chessboard” for global superpowers, saying the post-1945 world order is “no longer fit for purpose.”
In a major foreign policy speech in New York, Albanese described strategic competition between China and the United States as the “most consequential” factor shaping the region, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Thursday.
“How Washington and Beijing manage their relationship matters profoundly. But it cannot be the only lens through which we see the region,” Albanese said, referring to the ongoing rivalry between the two powers to expand their influence.
Indo-Pacific countries must shape their own future
Countries across the Indo-Pacific are not “spectators”, Albanese said. Instead, they are shaping the region’s future and “writing their own script”.
His comments on the rules-based international order echoed warnings from other like-minded leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney has said middle powers must unite because “if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”
Albanese said Australia needed to help shape a new global order by building new relationships, defending the rules governing relations between countries and rejecting the idea that might makes right.
Australia announces new support for Ukraine
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, Albanese signed a 10-year security agreement and announced an additional $60 million in funding to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia.
“I think Russia thought it could just steamroll through in a matter of weeks, and what we have found is the people of Ukraine were underestimated,” Albanese said.
