The World Health Organization (WHO) said 1,282 people were killed and 5,891 injured in Yemen between Aug. 6 and Oct. 11 amid a military escalation.

The figures were included in the UN agency’s seventh report on the conflict. The total number of people killed or injured during the period was 7,173, with deaths accounting for 17.9% of the casualties, according to WHO.

The report recorded a further 2,007 casualties between Oct. 3 and 11, including 323 deaths and 1,684 injuries. The daily average rose to about 223 people killed or injured, up from 114 in the preceding period.

The escalation comes amid the “Dawn of Yemen” military operation, launched earlier this month by Yemen’s internationally recognized government to retake areas held by the Houthis, including the capital, Sanaa.

Backed by a Saudi-led coalition, the offensive has intensified fighting on several fronts, particularly in Taiz, where government forces and the Houthis are battling for strategic positions and supply routes.

Yemen has been in conflict since the Houthis seized Sanaa in 2014, forcing the internationally recognized government from the capital. A Saudi-led coalition intervened militarily in support of the government in 2015.
