US Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday that the Trump administration will use the Defense Production Act to expand a refinery in Tyler, Texas, with the aim of boosting production of commercial and military-grade fuels.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Texas, Vance said the administration was working with the refinery operated by “Delek” and had invoked the law to support the expansion.
“We want millions of gallons of commercial-grade and military-spec fuel to come out of this refinery, in addition to what it’s already producing,” Vance said.
The expansion is intended to increase the facility’s existing output. The announcement came as high gasoline and diesel prices weigh on US households and businesses, adding to economic concerns three weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The national average price of gasoline was about $4.34 per gallon on Tuesday, while diesel averaged $6.28, according to the American Automobile Association.
The Defense Production Act gives the federal government authority to prioritize certain industrial orders and support increased production of goods considered essential to national defense.
