US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked the delegation led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to leave the United States.
According to information provided by US officials to Anadolu Agency and Axios, the US mission to the United Nations told Iran’s UN mission on Monday evening that Abbas Araghchi and the delegation must leave New York “immediately.”
Delegation heads to Doha
According to Axios, a US official said the Iranian delegation had “exceeded the time allotted for it to remain here.” The official said there was no reason for Iranian officials to stay in New York after the UN General Assembly meetings had ended.
According to the report, the delegation left New York for Doha at about 1:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Another source said Araghchi’s return to Tehran that evening had been planned in advance.
No progress made in talks
The delegation’s departure came as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between Washington and Tehran were losing momentum.
According to Axios, the White House had hoped for progress during talks held on Monday morning. However, it became clear in the afternoon that the discussions had reached an impasse.
Qatari mediators continued discussions with both Washington and Tehran on a possible compromise proposal.
Opening of the Strait of Hormuz on agenda
The diplomatic setback came against the backdrop of a broader conflict that emerged after the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone strikes across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments.
Diplomatic efforts have continued since June, when the United States and Iran signed a memorandum providing for urgent measures aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.
The latest talks focused not only on ending military operations but also on ensuring the safety of cargo shipments through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. Following the suspension of the discussions, Qatar’s mediation efforts remain the main diplomatic channel for finding a compromise between Washington and Tehran.
