Representatives of the United States, Europe, Ukraine and NATO held what US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described as “constructive discussions” in Florida on Friday about de-escalating and ending the war with Russia ahead of winter.
The talks in Miami covered immediate winter preparations, including energy resilience and grain exports, as well as security guarantees and longer-term arrangements for the security of Ukraine and Europe, Witkoff said in a post on “X”.
Participants also discussed support for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction and economic prosperity, including its accession to the European Union, he said. The exchange was productive and helped identify issues for further consideration before the United States’ next engagement with Russia, Witkoff added.
“Participants reaffirmed their shared commitment to continuing diplomatic efforts toward a sustainable peace that strengthens security and creates opportunities for lasting stability and prosperity,” he said.
The meeting took place on the same day US President Donald Trump said he had concluded a “highly successful discussion” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump wrote on “Truth Social” that Russia had agreed to immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel to the US and global markets, another 500,000 tonnes during November and 1 million tonnes immediately afterwards.
The US Treasury Department later issued a general licence authorising transactions related to the sale, delivery, offloading and importation of Russian-origin diesel fuel through April 7 next year.
