Authorities in the US state of Georgia are searching for a suspect after a shooting at a block party left two people dead and 35 injured, according to the BBC.
About 1,000 people had gathered in the rural community of Vienna when more than 50 shots were fired in the early hours of Sunday, officials said. The shooting took place around 01:30 local time during a Dooly High School homecoming celebration, which was not sponsored by the school.
Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, while 25 others were taken to nearby hospitals. Some of the injured were in critical condition. Victims ranged in age from 14 to 51.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said deputies had been positioned at both ends of the gathering because officials expected a large crowd. He told local media that people initially reported hearing fireworks before someone said a person had been shot.
As people fled in different directions, officers moved through the crowd to reach the injured. The two people who died were found several blocks from the shooting scene on Pine Street.
Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls told CBS News that the victims were men aged 20 and 23. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner’s Office said it would conduct autopsies and that the bureau was joining the investigation at the sheriff’s office’s request.
The investigation is active and ongoing. No arrests have been reported, and authorities have not announced a possible motive.
Dooly High School said its thoughts were with the families of those killed, the injured and everyone affected by the shooting.
