German settlers arrived in Azerbaijan about two centuries ago, AnewZ reports. The communities they established became known for winemaking and left their mark on the country’s cultural and architectural heritage.

The settlers’ history reflects the challenges of different communities living together, as well as political persecution and forced relocations.

German migration to Azerbaijan began when Swabian families from Baden-Württemberg, in what is now southwestern Germany, left their homeland and settled in the South Caucasus.

What began as a search for a new home became part of a broader history shaped by cultural exchange, economic development and the grave consequences of political upheaval. This experience also offers insight into how people of different backgrounds learned to live and work together.

German settlers established numerous communities in different parts of the South Caucasus. Their main settlements in Azerbaijan were Helenendorf and Annenfeld. Smaller communities included Georgsfeld, Alexandersfeld, Eigenfeld, Grünfeld, Traubenfeld and Elisabethal.

The feature “Counterpoint: Two Centuries of German-Azerbaijani Shared History” examines how German settlers and local Azerbaijanis built thriving communities while preserving their distinct religions, languages and traditions, and how Soviet repression, deportations and war later affected their shared history.
