US President Donald Trump on Monday renewed his call to rename the southwestern state of New Mexico “New America”, saying the change would boost its prestige, property values and incomes, Anadolu Agency reported.

“New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Trump wrote on “Truth Social”.

He added that the proposed name would bring “great value and prestige” to the state, and said home values and incomes would rise and residents would be prouder when saluting the US flag.

State name change would require constitutional amendment

Trump first proposed the change in September, describing “New America” as a more prestigious name for the landlocked state in the US Southwest. Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected the proposal when he first raised it last month.

Trump cannot rename a US state unilaterally. Changing New Mexico’s name would require an amendment to its constitution.

Trump has proposed other geographic name changes

The proposal follows Trump’s earlier moves to rename geographic landmarks. In January 2025, he issued an executive order directing federal authorities to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico”.

In August, he signed another executive order directing US federal agencies to rename Lake Ontario, which borders the United States and Canada, “Lake America”.

At a rally in Tennessee on Oct. 10, Trump also floated renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas”.

More recently, at a rally in Georgia on Friday, Trump said he had jokingly asked “Google” about renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean “Trump Ocean”.
