Prosecutors described Russell Brand as “ruthless” and a “sexual predator” as the British comedian’s trial on rape and sexual assault charges began on Wednesday.

Opening the prosecution’s case, King’s Counsel Riel Karmy-Jones told the court that the alleged offences took place in locations “as wide and as varied as the defendant’s career”. She listed a hotel room, workplaces, a bar toilet cubicle and Brand’s home.

“He was ruthless, calculated and manipulative, and the prosecution say — a sexual predator,” Karmy-Jones said.

Brand has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault, according to the BBC.

The allegations were made by six women and date from 1999 to 2009.

Arriving at court, Brand said he felt “blessed”. He added: “I feel of course concerned but hopeful this process will lead to good outcomes for everybody — that is my prayer.”
