Mauritius extended its curfew for a second night on Wednesday as the island nation faced its worst unrest in nearly three decades in some areas.
An overnight curfew imposed on Tuesday was lifted on Wednesday morning after police said the situation was under control and reported several arrests.
A spokesperson in Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s office said all schools would remain closed for the rest of the week, except those attended by students taking international exams.
The unrest began last week over water shortages and the cost of living, and intensified after a woman was shot and injured by police. In a televised address on Tuesday, Ramgoolam called the unrest unacceptable.
After Wednesday’s announcement, tour operators urged customers to stay at their accommodation and avoid unnecessary travel during curfew hours, from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday.
