The Israeli army is building a wide trench and an earthen embankment to tighten its blockade of the Gaza Strip, while continuing operations targeting Hamas members, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Monday.
The barrier, designed to stop vehicles, is being completed east of the Yellow Line, which separates an area controlled by the Israeli army from one where Palestinians are allowed to move freely. The newspaper said the work also involves drilling into the ground at regular intervals.
The measures are intended to ensure that no tunnel crossing into Israel has been missed, the report said.
According to the newspaper, Israeli forces currently control about 64% of the Gaza Strip, with two divisions deployed across roughly 30 military positions. It said operational activity also focuses on continued attacks targeting Hamas members.
The report said the measures come two and a half years after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel was “one step away from victory”. Despite the extensive Israeli military presence, the newspaper said, Hamas still governs the territory.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Sunday that six Palestinians had been killed and three others had died of wounds caused by Israeli fire in the previous 24 hours.
The ministry said Israeli forces had killed at least 1,454 people and injured nearly 5,100 since a ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10, 2025.
Since October 2023, Israel’s war in Gaza has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured over 175,000, according to Palestinian figures. The figures also say about 90% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been destroyed.
