Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente commented on his team’s 2-1 victory over Croatia in the fourth round of the Nations League. Spain fell behind but secured the win with two goals from Mikel Merino.
De la Fuente singled out his team’s character: “This is a fantastic group of players who never give up and continue to surprise us in every match. It was not easy to play against a strong opponent in such an atmosphere. We were clearly on top in the second half and turned the game around.”
The coach said Spain had worn down their opponents in the first half but took full control after the break. He said Merino was good enough to play for any team and praised the midfielder for coming on as a substitute, immediately finding the rhythm of the game and showing his scoring instinct.
De la Fuente noted that Spain had gone 42 consecutive matches without a defeat and said the team wanted to extend that run. Marca reported his comments.
