A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded a man in his car in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, while a five-year-old child was in the vehicle, city officials said.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated that agents surrounded the man and child before firing several rounds. The child was believed to have suffered no physical injuries, he said.
“This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” Mamdani said. He added that he planned to speak with President Donald Trump and demand an end to ICE enforcement actions in the city.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, said officers were carrying out a “targeted enforcement operation” in the Bronx to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic who had a prior criminal conviction. The department said an ICE officer fired a weapon during the incident and the man was injured.
Officers provided immediate aid, DHS said, adding that the man was alive and had been taken to a local hospital. The shooting occurred at about 4 p.m. local time, the department said.
DHS alleged that the man had associations with a gang and prior criminal convictions, but did not identify him or provide evidence for the claims.
Federal agents have faced criticism over the use of deadly force against immigrants and the subsequent characterization of targets as gang members. The Trump administration has also accused immigrants and protesters of using vehicles as weapons, saying agents fired in response to “vehicular attacks.”
