The United States has withdrawn all 12 B-1 bombers from Britain’s RAF Fairford air base, a week after several people were detained over a suspected plot to attack the facility.
The Pentagon confirmed that the aircraft had returned to their permanent bases in the United States because of concerns related to operational security.
Security concerns at Fairford base
The bombers at the base in Gloucestershire were used in US strikes on Iranian targets. British and US officials have expressed concern about a possible attack on the facility.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” of Iranian involvement in the suspected plot. Tehran has rejected the allegation as baseless.
US President Donald Trump said those behind the alleged plot intended to cause “major damage.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested that a possible “foreign actor” was involved.
Iran rejects allegations
Iran has said it had no connection to the suspected plot and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran to the Foreign Ministry to protest the allegations.
Britain had authorized the deployment of US bombers at Fairford to support strikes against Iranian missile sites targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The decision has highlighted the base’s role amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.
