Two people died in Spain’s Catalonia region on Sunday as heavy rain and storms hit parts of the country, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said in a post on “X”.
Sánchez offered condolences to the victims’ families and friends and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and follow instructions from official sources during emergencies.
Catalan leader Salvador Illa also expressed condolences, saying the situation remained complicated. Regional authorities said they were continuing to respond to incidents across Catalonia.
Authorities warn residents near rivers
The regional emergency service described the situation around the Ridaura and Daro rivers in Girona as concerning and urged residents to stay away from affected areas.
The severe weather followed forecasts of torrential rain and potentially damaging floods in eastern Spain over the coming days, as cold air at higher altitudes moves over warmer air.
