Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an early warning on Friday predicting a magnitude 9.9 earthquake in the Kuril Islands, then canceled it eight minutes later after determining it had overestimated the magnitude of a quake in the area, Fuji News Network reported.
The alert was issued at 12:40 p.m. (0340 GMT). The US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the Kuril Islands.
The agency said the warning was withdrawn because of “an overestimation of the magnitude,” Livedoor News reported.
At an afternoon news conference, the agency apologized and said it was investigating what caused the overestimation. It also said a cyberattack was not considered a possibility.
