At least 10 people believed to be tourists were killed and nine others injured in a fire at a resort on the Cox’s Bazar coast in southeastern Bangladesh on Saturday morning, the country’s fire service confirmed, according to Anadolu Agency.

The blaze broke out at a wooden resort and restaurant at Inani Sea Beach in Cox’s Bazar. Two firefighting units, local authorities and police responded, and the fire was completely extinguished, the fire service said in a statement.

The Border Guard said its personnel also took part in the rescue operation.

Jamuna TV reported that the fire broke out early in the morning while people were asleep. The identities of those injured have not been confirmed. Those affected are believed to be tourists because the area is a popular destination, the report said.

The fire may have started at a stove in the resort kitchen or as a result of an electrical short circuit, according to the report. The cause has not been verified.

District authorities have formed a committee to investigate the incident.
