Azerbaijan’s men’s senior national team has won the team title at the Beach Wrestling World Championships for the first time in its history. The team finished the competition with two gold and three bronze medals.
According to head coach Oyan Nazariani, Azerbaijan was represented by two athletes in the 80-kilogram weight category, and both won medals. One of the wrestlers became world champion, while the other finished third.
“These results show that beach wrestling is developing in Azerbaijan and that our athletes are becoming more competitive on the international stage. The results we achieved provide additional motivation for future successes,” the coach said.
Nazariani also recalled the team’s other achievements this season. Azerbaijan’s U-17 boys’ team won the European title, while at the World Championships held in Baku, it finished second with 85 points, matching Iran’s national team in points and medal results. The U-17 women’s team also won a gold medal at the World Championships.
United World Wrestling named Oyan Nazariani the best coach of the year in beach wrestling. He described the award as the result of the joint efforts of the team, the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The head coach said the national team’s main upcoming goal is the Summer Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Dakar, Senegal, in November.
Beach wrestling is a discipline governed by United World Wrestling and is contested on sand in a format designed for short, intense bouts. International team success in the sport reflects both individual medal performances and the depth of a country’s squad across weight categories.
