Yemen’s army said Monday that government forces had seized Dhubab district and strategic positions around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait after clashes with Houthi forces.
Forces from the Nation’s Shield and the pro-government Southern Giants Brigades, backed by the Popular Resistance, took control of Dhubab in western Taiz province, the official Saba news agency reported.
A military source told Saba that the forces launched a large-scale operation, supported by air power, targeting Houthi positions and fighters in several parts of the district.
The forces advanced to key positions and cut supply lines and routes leading to Bab el-Mandeb, the source said. An unspecified number of Houthi fighters were killed or wounded, while several military vehicles and pieces of equipment were destroyed or damaged.
The Southern Giants Brigades separately announced the start of what it called a “decisive” operation against the Houthis in the Bab el-Mandeb area.
The operation followed an order by Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi to begin what the government calls a “battle for liberation”, aimed at restoring state institutions and territory under Houthi control.
Bab el-Mandeb is a strategic waterway linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, and is an important route for international shipping.
