OpenAI has unveiled an always-on artificial intelligence assistant called Dots, alongside a $500 monthly ChatGPT plan, as the company expands from answering requests to carrying out tasks for users.
Introduced at OpenAI’s developer conference, Dots runs on the company’s GPT-6 Astra model and has its own cloud computer and browser. OpenAI said the assistant can connect to more than 4,000 applications, work toward users’ goals around the clock and learn from their feedback.
Users can message or call their dot through ChatGPT on desktop, the web and mobile devices. The assistant can also be contacted through Slack and Microsoft Teams, while text messaging is planned for a later date, according to OpenAI.
Dots can report its progress, ask questions and retain context across different channels. “It’s like an AI helper that’s always got your back,” CEO Sam Altman said at the event. Discussing user controls, he added: “This allows you to trust your dot with as much responsibility as you’re comfortable with.”
How OpenAI’s Dots assistant works
OpenAI said Dots could monitor customer feedback, prepare tested software fixes and update research figures when new data becomes available. The company’s teams are using Dots to investigate bugs reported in Slack.
In an early test outside the company, a dot prepared an overdue invoice and sent it after receiving the user’s approval.
Rollout and user controls
Dots is beginning to roll out to Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets. Enterprise customers, including education and healthcare organisations, can try a beta version if their workspace administrators enable it.
Users initially receive one dot, with support for additional dots planned for the future. They can choose which applications the assistant may access and set rules that require approval or block specific actions.
OpenAI said background research conducted by a dot uses read-only access to connected applications. Users can inspect the assistant’s work and review actions that could affect their accounts. The company is also testing specialist Dots for organisational tasks including procurement, customer support and commercial contracting.
New $500 ChatGPT plan and additional tools
OpenAI’s new Pro 500 plan costs $500 per month and offers the company’s highest included usage allowance, equivalent to 25 times the allowance available under ChatGPT Plus.
The plan also provides access to Ultrafast processing for GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI said Ultrafast can generate output up to eight times faster in Codex.
The company also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, which it said approaches Astra’s performance on coding and professional tasks at one-fifth of Astra’s standard API input and output token prices.
Another new product, ChatGPT Space, gives teams a shared environment for working with ChatGPT and Dots. OpenAI said ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users.
