A foreign cargo ship named “Royad Mammadov” was hit in a drone attack in the Black Sea near the coast of Romania.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released the information.
According to the information received, Azerbaijani citizen Rustam Ismayil oglu Hasanov, the ship’s captain, who was born in 1974, was killed in the attack. Another Azerbaijani citizen, Mahammad Hamza oglu Suleymanzade, born in 2002, is missing. Search operations are under way.
The other Azerbaijani citizens among the crew were rescued, and three of them were taken to hospital.
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with the country’s diplomatic missions and the competent authorities of the countries concerned. Measures are being taken to provide the citizens with necessary medical and consular assistance and to arrange the return of the bodies of those killed to Azerbaijan.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of our compatriots who were killed and wish those injured a speedy recovery.
“We once again urge Azerbaijani citizens to refrain from travelling to areas where military operations are under way and the security situation is unstable, and from working in those areas or aboard vehicles travelling on risky routes, particularly ships,” the statement said.
The ministry’s statement also highlights the risks faced by people travelling or working in areas affected by military operations and underscores the importance of consular assistance for Azerbaijani citizens abroad.
