Eleven Indian nationals were injured when a projectile hit the Panama-flagged commercial vessel “MT On Peace” as it transited the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said.
Seventeen of the vessel’s 19 crew members were Indian nationals, according to the ministry. A total of 12 crew members were injured, it said.
With help from Omani authorities, the injured crew were evacuated and are receiving medical treatment in Khasab, Oman.
India said repeated attacks on shipping in the region were a “cause of deep concern” and called for an immediate end to such incidents in the interests of regional peace and stability.
“The targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers and civilian infrastructure in the region must end,” the ministry said, adding that navigation and commerce through international waterways should be restored as soon as possible.
Regional tensions have remained high since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran retaliated against Israeli targets and US military facilities across the region, while the conflict has severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy supplies.
Iran has linked the full reopening of the strait to steps including an end to hostilities, sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets and the implementation of commitments by Washington.
