Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced on Monday the launch of a military operation to retake the capital, Sanaa, and restore state institutions from the Houthis.
Al-Alimi said on “X” that the operation, named “Dawn of Yemen,” would be carried out by the Yemeni armed forces and other military formations, with support from the country’s allies.
He said the operation was intended to restore state institutions, retake Sanaa and end what he described as the Houthis’ coup.
The announcement came as Yemeni government forces launched operations against the Houthis in several areas, including the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb region.
Earlier on Monday, the Yemeni army said government forces had seized Dhubab district and strategic positions near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait following clashes with the Houthis.
The pro-government Southern Giants Brigades also announced a military operation against the Houthis in the area, describing it as “decisive.”
The Houthis have controlled Sanaa since September 2014, as well as large areas of northern and western Yemen. The internationally recognized government and allied forces control mainly southern and eastern areas.
