Yemen’s army said on Saturday that it had carried out 71 operations targeting Houthi positions in Taiz, a province in the country’s southwest.
Army spokesman Col. Majed Abdullah al-Nuzaili said in a statement on “X” that the operations targeted combat gatherings, military buildups and reinforcements belonging to the Houthi group.
Areas targeted in Taiz
Al-Nuzaili said the operations took place in al-Aqrood, Sama’, al-Ahkum, al-Akboush, Jabal Rasin, Jabal Jardad, Bani Omar, Bani Bakari, al-Kaawash and al-Athawir.
He said the strikes destroyed several vehicles used for transport and support and left militia members “neutralized”, adding that the group’s formations had been stripped of their ability to continue fighting. He did not give a casualty figure.
The Houthi group did not comment on the statement.
Clashes and shelling reported
The announcement comes amid an escalation between government forces and the Houthis in Taiz Governorate. On Friday, six civilians, including two children and a woman, were injured in Houthi artillery shelling that hit residential neighborhoods in central Taiz, Yemen’s state-run Saba news agency reported.
The army also said on Friday that heavy clashes had broken out with the Houthis on the northern front of Taiz city, without giving further details. It said it had launched dozens of airstrikes against Houthi movements, reinforcements, gatherings and positions in several parts of the governorate.
Yemen’s Interior Ministry separately announced the death of Mohammed al-Khawlani, chief of staff of the ministry’s Emergency Forces Brigade, during clashes with the Houthis on the al-Kadha front in Taiz.
The fighting is part of a military escalation that began in July and is the most extensive since the relative calm that followed the April 2022 truce.
