A US Marine stationed in Okinawa was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder and robbery after a woman was found dead in a hotel room, local police told CNN.
The 39-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in her room in Naha early on Saturday and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Based on the condition of her body, officers believe she was murdered, but gave no further details.
What police say happened
The 20-year-old suspect was stationed at Futenma Air Station on Okinawa, according to police.
Police said CCTV footage reportedly showed a man believed to be a foreign national entering the hotel room with the woman and later leaving the building with her belongings.
The woman’s body was found at about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Marine was arrested less than 24 hours later, at 1 a.m., while walking around the city, police said.
US response
The US Embassy in Tokyo said on X that it was aware a US service member was in custody following the death of a Japanese national in Okinawa.
“As an investigation is underway to determine the facts of the case, the United States is communicating and cooperating with the Government of Japan and local authorities,” the embassy said.
CNN said it had contacted the Pentagon and the US Marine Corps for comment. Police said the investigation is continuing.
