Senior US House lawmakers are pressing the Trump administration to release full details of an agreement that gives Washington a significant stake in a private Venezuelan oil company and supports a broader energy deal, multiple news outlets reported on Wednesday.
A bipartisan congressional letter led by Representative Gregory Meeks of New York described the administration’s transaction involving North American Blue Energy Partners as “a remarkable imitation of Maduro regime’s economic playbook.”
The inquiry was sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Lawmakers asked the officials to explain the financial, legal and foreign policy basis of the arrangement negotiated with Delcy Rodriguez.
Lawmakers demand underlying contract
Members of Congress said they sought answers about the transaction during a classified committee briefing on September 14, but did not receive sufficient information. They have now formally requested the complete contract underlying the agreement.
The letter described Rodriguez as Venezuela’s unelected leader and said she and President Nicolas Maduro had lost the country’s 2024 presidential election before US forces captured Maduro earlier this year.
Agreement covers 17 oil fields
The energy pact was announced in late August between the Trump administration and Rodriguez’s interim government. It provides for the development of 17 oil fields holding approximately 65 billion barrels of proven reserves.
