A Russian drone struck the grounds of the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv on Wednesday, Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate said on Thursday. No casualties were reported.
Damage and radiation checks underway
According to the institute, the drone hit the site at 6:18 p.m. local time, near the VVR-M research reactor. A fire caused by the strike was quickly extinguished, the inspectorate said.
An investigation and damage assessment are underway. The reactor and its safety-critical systems were not damaged, and radiation readings remained within the natural background range, according to the statement.
Reactor has been shut down since 2022
The inspectorate said the reactor has been shut down and its core fully unloaded since February 2022 to reduce radiation risks. Its operation is limited to routine maintenance of safety-critical systems.
The statement described the strike as an attack on a peaceful nuclear facility that carries out scientific and research work. Russia has not commented on the report.
