Qatari mediators will present the United States with new ideas discussed with Tehran on how to meet Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday.
According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, Araghchi told Iranian reporters in New York that he had held another meeting with Qatari mediators to discuss possible ways to implement Tehran’s demands.
“They had ideas, and we discussed how a way could be found to meet Iran’s conditions and how those conditions could be fulfilled,” he said.
US response expected
The proposals will now be conveyed to the US side, after which Washington’s response will be relayed to Tehran, Araghchi said.
“I hope this will happen by tomorrow,” he added, indicating that a final US response could come on Tuesday.
Araghchi said he would leave New York for Tehran within hours, while the Qatari mediators would pass on the US position once it became available.
Indirect contacts continue
The minister said channels of communication through Qatari and Pakistani mediators had remained open, but had become more serious after Iran submitted its latest proposal.
He added that Tehran had used its meetings in New York to communicate to Washington and the international community the conditions it says must be met before the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened.
