The United States is attempting to seize control over the economies and energy routes of all leading nations, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Lavrov made these remarks during an interview with the international BRICS TV channel. The diplomat stated that Washington is closely monitoring European energy infrastructure, including the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines—which were damaged in September 2022—as well as the Ukrainian gas transit system and the TurkStream pipeline.
Lavrov added that the US is striving to influence the global economy through a series of tools that do not meet the standards of fair competition. He specifically cited the use of increased tariffs and sanction pressures by the administration of US President Donald Trump as primary examples of this strategy. The minister further noted that while the influence and weight of the US in the global economy are declining, there is a simultaneous rise of Global South countries on the international stage.
The statements come amid shifting dynamics in global energy security and the ongoing expansion of the BRICS bloc, which seeks to provide an alternative to Western-led economic structures. Azerbaijan, maintaining a balanced foreign policy, has also expressed interest in enhancing cooperation with BRICS to diversify its economic partnerships and strengthen its role as a regional energy and logistics hub between Europe and Asia.
