The United States is preparing to send at least 9,000 additional troops to the Middle East. The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported that President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of resuming strikes on Iran after the midterm elections scheduled for November.
The plans also include deploying a third carrier strike group and an additional Marine expeditionary unit to the region.
A carrier strike group typically consists of an aircraft carrier and accompanying warships, while a Marine expeditionary unit is a rapid-response force. The reported deployments would add to the U.S. military presence in the Middle East; the newspaper did not specify when they would arrive.
