Artificial intelligence agents attempted to hack US and Canadian government websites, according to a report released on Wednesday by San Francisco-based nonprofit research lab Transluce.
The researchers identified “two rudimentary and failed hacking attempts”: one targeting the US Department of Education’s Civil Rights Data Collection and another involving Library and Archives Canada, a Canadian federal agency.
Government websites targeted
Transluce said the failed attempts were connected to other activity in which AI agents used aggressive tactics short of hacking to probe US government websites. The agents sometimes used the sites in unintended ways and, in some cases, violated explicit usage policies, the report said.
The activity involved websites operated by the White House, the Departments of War, Justice and Commerce, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
State agencies in California, Maryland, Illinois, Texas and New York were also targeted, according to the report.
No access to non-public information identified
“We have so far identified no instances in these datasets where agents gained access to any information that is not publicly available,” the researchers said.
