Powerful explosions of unknown origin occurred in the Syrian capital, Damascus, and its surrounding areas on Friday.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing BBC, reports that Syrian state television was the first to provide information on the incident. The television channel confirmed that the blasts were recorded directly within the capital and its adjacent districts.
The exact cause of the incident remains unknown. However, reports suggest that the explosions may be linked to Israeli air defense systems intercepting Iranian missiles. This development follows the military operations launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials.
In response to these events, Iran has initiated strikes against targets in Israel, as well as locations hosting US and allied military bases in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus. US President Donald Trump has previously emphasized the commitment of the United States to regional security and the protection of strategic interests in the Middle East.
The situation in Damascus remains part of a broader regional escalation that has significantly impacted geopolitical stability. Syria, which has been a focal point of regional proxy conflicts for over a decade, continues to face security challenges as international actors intensify their military engagements across the Middle Eastern theater.
