China and Indonesia have reached an agreement to strengthen military ties and deepen cooperation in the sectors of mineral resources, energy, and technology.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this move is viewed as part of Jakarta's strategy to maintain a balance between China and the United States amid rising global economic and geopolitical tensions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun, who are currently visiting Indonesia, held high-level discussions with their counterparts.

Wang Yi stated that the current international situation is complex and that unilateral policies are significantly impacting global stability. He emphasized China's commitment to elevating cooperation with Indonesia to a higher level.

The parties agreed to expand joint activities in several areas, including artificial intelligence, railway transport, green energy, satellite technology, and fisheries.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed his country's commitment to an "independent and active" foreign policy, declaring that Indonesia will maintain friendly relations with both China and the United States, its primary trading partner.

Indonesia possesses vast mineral reserves, including nickel, tin, copper, gold, and bauxite, with China serving as one of the primary importers of these resources. Furthermore, the two nations plan to expand their defense cooperation.

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun noted that military relations between the two countries have developed in terms of quality and effectiveness. Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin added that the two nations will increase joint military exercises, officer exchanges, and partnerships within the defense industry.

China remains one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Indonesia. Major Chinese companies, such as Contemporary Amperex Technology and Tsingshan Group, are key players in the Indonesian market, despite some recent investor concerns regarding tax policies and nickel pricing regulations.

This deepening of ties reflects the broader geopolitical trend in Southeast Asia, where nations are increasingly seeking to diversify their economic partnerships while navigating the strategic competition between major global powers.
