A passenger bus carrying tourists was involved in a fatal accident in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, resulting in the deaths of 10 people.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing local fire department reports, the incident occurred at approximately 04:30 local time in a mountainous area near the city of Petropolis. Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus lost control, veered off the road, and overturned.

Emergency responders and medical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. Initially, eight fatalities were confirmed at the site, while two additional victims succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the hospital, bringing the total death toll to 10. The Brazilian Federal Highway Police stated that the bus had departed from Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state, and was en route to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. The highway was closed for approximately four hours following the crash, and law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Brazil's road network, particularly in mountainous regions like the Serra do Mar where Petropolis is located, frequently experiences hazardous driving conditions. Accidents involving long-distance passenger transport are a recurring concern in the country, often prompting authorities to implement stricter safety regulations and road maintenance protocols to prevent such tragedies.
